An increasing number of Tesla owners are putting their used vehicles on the market, partly in response to backlash over Elon Musk’s political actions and the global protests they’ve triggered.
In March, listings for used Tesla cars on Autotrader surged significantly, according to a report from Sherwood News, which cited data from Cox Automotive, the parent company of Autotrader. The spike was especially notable during the final week of March, with over 13,000 used Teslas listed for sale—marking a 67% increase compared to the same week the previous year.
At the same time, sales of new Tesla vehicles have slowed, even as overall electric vehicle (EV) sales from competing brands continue to grow. According to the latest report from Kelley Blue Book, nearly 300,000 new EVs were sold in the U.S. during the first quarter of 2025, reflecting a 10.6% year-over-year increase. Meanwhile, Tesla’s new car sales declined by nearly 9% compared to the same period in 2024.
While Tesla remains ahead, competitors like GM and Hyundai are gaining ground. For example, GM nearly doubled its EV sales in the first quarter year-over-year, selling over 30,000 electric vehicles, according to Kelley Blue Book.
